Top Ten Tuesday – Halloween

It’s TTT time! Of course, this one has to be Halloween themed. I decided to list my top (ten) scary/creepy/Halloween-ish moments. They will be a mix of real-life events, books, movies, and whatever else comes to mind. As usual, Jana over at That Artsy Reader Girl hosts these weekly challenges (so, see her blog for more info). I’ve linked to Goodreads and to IMDB pages when possible. Also, this list may contain spoilers, just FYI.

  • The scene where Georgie freaks himself out to go down into the basement to retrieve some art supplies in It reminded me of all the times I freaked myself out to go down into my grandparents’ basement. I had to put down the book at that point.
  • The creepy clown puppet in Poltergeist gave me a big fright when it jumps out from under the bed. I was 12 or 13 when I watched that movie and up until that point, I was not afraid of monsters under my bed, of puppets, or of clowns. That movie cured that real quick!
  • That time I watched Nightmare on Elm Street with my dad and he scratched along my bedroom door in the middle of the night to tease me. Yeah, that scared the bejeezus out of me.
  • Pretty much anytime anyone jumps out of a corner. I am easily spooked and super jumpy and especially when I am walking somewhere I am always deep in thought. People know that and love to scare me :p
  • One time when I flew from Florida to North Carolina the plane hit an air pocket during a thunderstorm and all the lights went out and we all got lifted out of our seats. Yeah, that was seriously scary. I think I am still traumatized.
  • The movie Se7en. Everything freaks me out about that movie. Too real. It’s just too real. The first time I watched it, I watched Saw afterward just to get my mind off of it.
  • In Alice (Christina Henry) the description of the asylum freaked me out. In general, descriptions of asylums and psychiatric wards make me uncomfortable. I think I am very emotional when I read those. It disturbs me to think about how we used to think about mental illness.
  • Anytime, I touch, see, or smell chewing gum. Specifically, the fruity kind. Eeeeek! So gross!
  • Jack’s struggles with alcoholism (and knowing King struggled with the same) in The Shining. Really, any detailed descriptions of addiction in books and movies mess with me hard. Trainspotting for example still haunts me.
  • When Robert gives himself up in the end, steps into the square and surrenders to his fate in I Am Legend. Powerful and super scary! I was so emotional reading that, I threw the book in a corner and just sat there for a good 10 minutes pondering life.

I am not even sure if these are truly my top ten scary moments but that’s what I can think of right now.

What did you write about in your TTT this week?

  1. I love this freebie topic – it’s so original. I loved the move Se7en but it also haunts me a bit. I can’t make it through Saw, though. Great list!
