My very first book tag!!!! I am smiling ear to ear. This is just such a-child-at-heart fun that I cannot resist (and really don’t want to anyway) and have to participate pronto.
I was tagged by my we-share-a-name-friend Juli at Kozy Words. It seems the tag originated from Tracy at Truffle’s Literary Wonders.
It is most definitely not winter where I live (I am looking at you 35*C and 80% humidity!) but we all know I dream of winter and snow all the time, so I am just going to use this book tag to indulge in my musings. I may or may not be sipping on hot chocolate and wearing flannel pajamas while I write this ….. Also, I am only considering wintery books or books I’d read during the winter as my answer options.
One: What book is so happy and so sweet that it just warms your heart?
Snow and Rose is a fantastic retelling of what might be my favorite Grimm fairytale. I have such nostalgia listening to the story the way my grandma told me and Emily Winfield Martin lived up to that. Her reimagining fit the atmosphere and characters perfectly. I read her book for the first time last Christmas and am pretty certain I will do the same this year.
Two: What’s your favorite book with a white cover?
Winterbay Abbey is a Gothic horror delight. It has all the elements for a perfectly spooky read: an abbey set in rural Maine, mysterious drownings in a dark sea surrounded by sharp cliffs, rumors and secrets, and an unreliable and desperate protagonist.
Three: You’re sitting in a nice, comfortable chair with a cup of hot chocolate. What monster book are you reading?
No list would be complete without at least one Stephen King book. Misery is the quintessential book to read on a winter night, alone, curled up with a blanket and a hot beverage. And as I always say, the real monsters are always mankind!
Four: It’s snowing outside and you decide you want to have a snowball fight. What fictional character do you want to have this snowball fight with?
If there ever was a trilogy to start on a wintery day, it would be this one, the Winternight Trilogy. Vasya is so badass and cunning, and she defies so many odds that I would love to be friends with her. I am sure she’d beat me in a snowball fight in a second but I wouldn’t care! The second book in the series is by far my favorite: Vasya really shines in that one.
Five: Sadly, your campfire is dying. What last few chapters of a book would you throw in the fire to revive it and keep yourself warm?
I had slated The Winter People to be my answer for question two until I remembered how annoyed I was by the ending. It was flat, way too short, and felt almost like an afterthought. This book would’ve been fantastic – … everything until the very last pages was pure perfection. The last pages can definitely be used as kindling! No one needs them in their life!
Six: What book do you love so much that you would buy another copy of it to give to someone as a Christmas gift (or any gift really) to inspire them to start reading?
I can’t count the ways in which I adore this novel. The Snow Child is so superbly whimsical. The prose is flawless for the setting and plot. There is so much magic and charm. This is definitely a book that I think everyone should read. A great gift choice!

What a fun little book tag! I haven’t read any of these except Misery and the Winternight trilogy. The rest were already on my TBR! lol. I really want to get to The Snow Child this year.

Yes! I hope you get to read that! It’s so wonderful! I think it’s the perfect book for that in between Christmas and New Year’s Eve time.

I was just reading the questions and your answers and thought: Oh that’s such a nice and lovely tag and then I discovered that you tagged me. *lol* So thank you! 😀 Also I really need to get to “The Bear and the Nightingale” so many people seem to love it and I’ve been curious for ages.

That trilogy is amazing. The first book started out a bit slow. I think Arden introduces too many characters but that is a bit typical for Russian lit which was her inspiration. But once you’re over the introduction hump, it gets really good. Book 2 and 3 are amazing.
